Nice one :)

...and thanks for the walk-through.
Now that my old knife is all fixed up I've been nervously eyeing up(as opposed to drooling over) this one, thinking that it's maybe not the best blade to start playing about with but a pal gave me a coping saw and a little bundle of blades a wee while ago, said I'd love it.

Any thoughts I had of trying to make my own handle for my blade have gone out of the window...
Just do what you had in mind doing with it when you bought it. It's the same blade. Handles can be replaced anytime. ;) .
The only bit of wood I have with any real significance is a lump of red oak removed from my folk's cottage during the renovation. A timber from a broken up ship when the building was last renovated in 1729. On the outside it's so many matches to look at but an inch down it's bulletproof between the big cracks
Who knows when I might get round to finding a big enough solid piece for a handle. In the meantime I'll probably stick on whatever's handy(ash probably) to practice making the slot etc.
