when i folded the leather, the top layer kind of ripped shown here:

Any ideas why and how to prevent this in the funture?

is the leather veg tanned and did you give it a good soaking before bending it?

looks good though - a functional first go!:D

For a minute then I thought you had been harvesting wheat!:D
To avoid stressing the leather - be it veg or chrome tanned - dampen it with good old fashioned water along the fold line at the very least,
This makes it more pliable and it should not tear.
To disguise a tear that has occured rub in a bit of bees wax and veg oil mix and then burnish it with a wooden dowl.
Still - it looks like your first sheaTH :)) ) should protect you from the knifes edge well enough...mine looked worse!
It gets kind of addictive after a while so you will get to learn lots of new techniques - and there is lots of leatherworking info dotted around old posts so do a bit of a "search" for more help.

Looking at the pic's their's Something wrong with the leather from the bottom to half way up the sheath, as it been sealed
