Any ideas why and how to prevent this in the funture?

Thanks for looking,
Mike

is the leather veg tanned and did you give it a good soaking before bending it?

looks good though - a functional first go!:D

For a minute then I thought you had been harvesting wheat!:D
To avoid stressing the leather - be it veg or chrome tanned - dampen it with good old fashioned water along the fold line at the very least,
This makes it more pliable and it should not tear.
To disguise a tear that has occured rub in a bit of bees wax and veg oil mix and then burnish it with a wooden dowl.
Still - it looks like your first sheaTH (:) ) should protect you from the knifes edge well enough...mine looked worse!
It gets kind of addictive after a while so you will get to learn lots of new techniques - and there is lots of leatherworking info dotted around old posts so do a bit of a "search" for more help.
Have fun!

Looking at the pic's their's Something wrong with the leather from the bottom to half way up the sheath, as it been sealed
Just my 2p worth.
