Well here is my First attempt at making a Knife and sheath!

This was an interesting project for a first knife I guess, as it was to be for my (small handed) Wife! so this added to the build time as I kept having to run inside from the workshop for a fitting! :) That said I think it came together well in the end (and she seems pleased so that's the main thing I guess!

The blade was a K J Eriksen 96mm Mora from The Good Stuff Shop (a great place to deal with btw)

The handle was a laminate of 4 thin plywood slabs. I have always liked the look of carved plywood so decided to try it as a handle so you could see the layers when it was sanded to shape. The Pictures do not do it justice but you can see the colour banding. It was finished by 4 coats of danish oil.

The Sheath was a venture into the unknown as followers of my thread Glueing Leather will know. I only had a load of thin ~1mm tanned leather so stuck 2 sheets together with evostick impact adhesive to gain a thivker and hopefully stiffer peice to work with. The result was more or less what I had hoped for and after a failed test 'stick' this time i took the precaution of sanding the shiny surface off one piece anad cleaned it with meths before sticking it to the other. it is still a relativly soft sheath and I would imagine it wouldn't be able to wet form it so havn't tried but already it is taking the shape of the knife:D

Anyway I'm very pleased and have already started on number 2 :o so at least the experience hasn't put me off!!!

Comments welcomed please friends!

The fit is reasonable.... I was all for stitching another row to 'tighten' it up but the Boss liked it the way it was! :dunno:

If you shake it upside down it eventually works its way out but as she will be wearing it on a belt gravity will help keep it in i guess!

I suppose it is all in the 'feel' the owner wants I guess and what is good for one is not for another......
