Got a matched pair....nice ones too.

But they are rather scratched and flaking.

should I simply sand the damage out or is there a way I can stabilise the horn? hard epoxy glue, maybe?

Im thinking of making drinking horns...These are perfect.

Horns always come with scratches and flakey bits. Raw ones do anyway. The nice shiney ones have already been sanded back to the sound material, then sanded again with a finer grit then finally polished with a polishing compound on a buffer wheel. So just sand them carefully, using finer and finer grits until they are smooth and blemish free. Then polish the surface until nice and shiney. At that stage you might want to consider some scrimshaw work on them.

i made a set of drinking horns from horns that looked almost exactly like that, sand them down until smooth going up through the grits as high as you've got, i went to two thousand. Then buff. i didnt use any compound, i wouldnt know which one to use with horn, but i still got a respectable finish.
