I just see someone in the "what did you buy today" forum say not to put methanol in alu bottles, something about eating them away.
Ok who has had a problem. I have used meths in sig bottles, and trangia sell alu ones, probably made by sig. think sig mite be owned by primus, my sig bottles i got in the 80s have primus internatinal on the stoppers.
I use to fly model airplanes, alu engine running methanol plus other stuff, didnt do that any harm.

FWIW I've seen a reaction with meths in a raw aluminium sigg bottle, over a long time period. I've not checked out the chemistry, but I got funny blobby stuff in the meths, and signs of surface corrosion on the alloy. The bottle was still useable after washing out though.

I think its down to the impurities in meths. I have a 20 year old unlined sigg bottle thats very badly pitted inside from having meths stored in it. Alcohol on its own isn't particularly corrossive to ally.

I bet your methanol was much cleaner than the durge we get sold as meths.

Most alu bottles are plastic lined so you won't see the issue unless there's an imperfection.

drink alu bottles have a coating, fuel bottles do not. if you look in the bottles you can see the difference, yellow colour in the drink ones. sig use to say it was so somepoeple could not taste the alu.

+1 to losing a Sigg bottle to meths corrosion. One of those neat little 250ml jobs, too. :(

how long did you leave fuel in it for.
I found a sig water bottle, the blue ones, i left at my mums half full of water for about 10 plus years, had white powder alu oxide all in the thread and some small bubbles on the out side, cleaned up ok.

would be nice if we could get a time period, how much fuel in the bottels when stored.
i dont carry much meths for priming my primus and when i come back home there is only a inch or so left in the bottle, looks ok to me, got 2 what have been used for paraffin petral and meths since 1985 86.
meths only been used in one the last 2 years.
I mite empty the meths one when home just to be on the safe side lol

I don't use alu bottles for meths at all now. Between them the Trangia 1L & 500ml bottles and the flat bottle from the SAT offer enough capacity for most trips.

I dont have a trangia red bottle, thought they were made of alu.
Think i will use the bottle what come with the sat i got my little boy from now on, that will be plenty for priming.
when he is with me its only for one night so still plenty.
What is that saying, they dont make them like they use to, make you wonder if old sig bottles were made of a higher grade ally than todays ones.

For me it would be anathema to actually pay for a bottle for denatured alcohol (or water for that matter). i use a recycled spring water bottle (100 to 200 ml depending on trip) for alcohol, and recycled Powerade 1 litre bottles for water. All strong enough to survive a nuclear holocaus. lLighter, stronger and free. What could be better?

I have never used meths in Al bottles but I have lost a couple plastic bottles to meths - after a few years the plasticizers are leached out of the bottle and the bottle cracks - no big deal except when it happened on the trail but even then not much of a problem since it was a small two ounce bottle used to fill the stove and I had a larger main bottle still OK - I have no idea if the plastic used in bottles sold for the purpose would show the same issue - one bottle was a small Nalgene bottle (old) and the other was a recycled bottle originally used for a sample of hand lotion
