OK Don't laugh, but do people want more of these things?

I ask because there is a box of about a dozen of these at the back of the store room at my Scout HQ and we were thinking about e-baying them except they would cost a bomb to post.

There is also an old ammo box full of spares.

anyone use a jet boil ?

Yes, it was amazing! We had hot coffee in the time it took to get the tent out of my bag let alone erected! Mind you it was hellish noisy, and not very "Bushcraft"

Having said that you should have seen the speed it cooked a tin of giant hot dogs :Wow:

Jetboil :D
The pot stand adaptor has added a new dimention to mine. I am currently experimenting with Eco (Geen gell) fuel and thr TX titanium. I use my mini trangia frying pan/pot set with it and my Titanium mug. If you want you coffee before you can get your tarp unpacked = Jetboil
If you want solid reliabilaty = Trangia
imo

Mojo has the right idea paraffin, meths, petrol/coleman stoves are what you want

British Army No.12 on the left (ok, you need a landrover to carry it) and an Optimus 123 with Sigg cookset on the right :)

Like antiques road show round here :D

The Coleman look spot on MadDave

Im just looking for something that will boil a cup of water as quickly as possible for getting a brew down at the range.
Im using a crusader kit with green heat and it's just a tad slow (and heavy and bulky  )
Jet boil looks like the job but the MSR kettle would have other uses.

For cooking im a Trangia man through and through but even the wee one is a little fiddly and slow when you just want a cup of hot water.

"Like antiques road show round here "

cheeky sod lol

The No.12 is current army issue, the 123 and Sigg is about 30 years old, but what a class act.

For solo camping the Trangia 27 is king :)

(ok, it's more of a barbecue...) :D

I've been really pleased with my mini Trangia for outdoor cooking/brews, but whereas I don't mind the smell of meths my other half hates it.... a lot

That looks fantastic - a 'proper' cooker!
I want one - are they available / for sale anywhere?

The three staples of Scouting (in my opinion) are

1 - Setting fire to something (The bigger the better)

2- Falling off things (Climbing/Abseiling)

3 - Staying up to 4AM by the side of a tent (Camping)

Explorer Scouts are somewhat different

1 - Setting fire to something small, but with panache (It impresses the girls)

2 - Falling off wet things (No more indoor walls for us!)

3 - Getting to bed before 4AM in a tent (Expedition work)

However the stoves belong to the Host group (My ESU are only partners) but their SL is a died in the wool Tilley Lamp man so I am sure he will keep a couple. :)

I came to the conclusion quite quickly that Explorer Scouts are on the same intellectual level as Beavers, possibly because they are learning everying over again but by themsleves this time and thats fine.

Even though "A Scout is to be trusted" there is a greater law "BPs beads don't go round the necks of fools" and so I don't normally leave my lot alone with flamable liquids. They used to wonder why I collected the tilley lamps back each night, and that was because if I didn't the little dears would empty them over the breakfast fire to avoid all that messy tinder and kindling!

Luckily I have a couple of 18 year olds who have almost made the journey through the second childhood and would love to play with these stoves and I am sure that we will be allowed to keep a couple for ourselves :D

Hey,

Well I have to agree I quite like the smell of meths, its just ethanol (The alcohol we drink) with a dash of methanol. If it was pure ethanol it would cost a fortune, as you would have to pay duty on it.

IMS (Industrial methylated sprits) does burn cleaner. The purple stuff you buy in the shops has dye in it, and a vomiting agent, to stop people drinking it. Even though its almost all ethanol, the methanol is what makes you go blind. Not to mention how bad it would be to drink that much ethanol.

Meths is always going to smell, not much you can do about that. I guess years as a chemist I am immune to the smell, heh.

I would not try to add anything to make it smell better. You might mask the sent, but it will probably burn badly and could damage your burner.

Google for it, there maybe something out there.

Pete
