I believe the chance of splitting can be reduced by using the wood the other way around - side-on as it were. But I've never tried anything similar, so that could be a load of tosh...

Nothing rough and ready about it Jon. This has got personality and has a bit of the soul of the person who made it. Its perfect as it is. You can't find that in any machine made anything, its priceless in my opinion. :You_Rock_
