That's really lovely, I like the details and the clean lines. Do you have more photos of your grinding set up? I have a belt sander like this, but just can't quite make out how you've adapted it to grind your blades or the angle adjustment. I would appreciate very much if you could show how the knife blank is held against the belt. Also what kind of belts do you use, I'm sorry for the request, but you've inspired me to adapt my sander and have a go!
Cheers
Nigel

I'll send you a PM later mate, i'll get you some more pics sorted. In the meantime take a look at this as this is what i got my inspiration from.

Crumbs HillBill, That really is a stunning piece of work ;)

I have a couple of pieces of burr but i can't remember whether they're Thuja or Amboiner...

both pieces are about 6"x6"x2"...

Use "go advanced", rather than just post quick reply? Assuming I've picked you up right anyway.

It's a really nice knife HillBill. Does the handle really flare out at the end or is it just the angles in the photos? If it does what's the reason behind it? It looks like it would be uncomfortable but, never having used one like that before, I'd have to assume it isn't! As you can probably guess I'm a knife noob, I've only got my cheap Mora! :p

Hi Lupis

Still the same!!

it's really strange not having all the options at the top of the reply box (and can't remember the code for nmany smileys!!)

Thanks for trying to help...

i'll put the question seperate to this thread so that it doesn't seem like a hijack!!

John :)

Its really quite a comfortable handle, it fits my hands well and provies a solid twist free grip.

They look like Thuya wood to me. You will know when you cut into them. The smell is really nice.

What are you going to use it for? Dont suppose you want to part with a piece do you? :D

Hi

i was hoping to make some knives when i can get everything set up in my garage (just have to get rid of a load of rubbish first!)

i'll hang on to it in case i ever get started;)

Cheers, John:)

Cheers HillBill I appreciate the help and the link is great, your set-up seems most straight forward though. I look forward to seeing more pics of it in use!
Thanks again
Nigel

Thanks for posting the new photos, they make it lot clearer. I'd thought the end was much wider than the rest of the handle but I see now it tapers in before it widens back out again and is actually about the same thickness as the main part of the handle. Makes more sense to me now. Thanks. :)

I always do my handles like that, they fit the contours of the hands nicely. :)

Nice to see you have done one for yourself HB....it looks great....we are still well and truly snowed in here on the Snake Pass but will get down to doing some comparisons with your knife when possible...at the minute here we could practise building Quinze's or even snow caves in some of the drifts...if I had the rawhide handy I would have a go at making a pair of snowshoes...it is that bad they would be very useful ...

Thanks Peter :). We have a bit of snow still on the ground here, about 2 or 3 inches but its been melting since last night.
