lunar eclipse Tuesday

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Just been down the local field, I think I was too early.

If you were too early you would have seen a full moon. The earths shadow started moving across the face of the moon at 6.32 reaching full eclipse at 7.40. At that time it is very low on most people's horizon you needed to get somewhere you could see a long way to the Western Horizon to see it.

I definitely missed it.
There's too much mist, you probably wouldn't see the sun.
Thanks for the heads up though, had a good morning walk.

Was it this morning? Because when i got up to do my paper round at 7 the moon was a funny reddy colour and it got smaller and smaller. We had a cloudless sky.

Had totally forgotten about it, got a frinds text telling me to look. Half asleep I went to look and text her back: I cant see it! She answered: Its an eclipse, doh! :o Hmm.... once she pointed me in the right direction I did get a look at it for a couple of minutes before the clouds moved in.

Ness :o

I watched a cloud bank instead.

same got up at 5 to get myself ready for a nice early start and to set the cam and stuff up... total cloud coverage :( not a happy bunny.

Why did it go a red colour?

It's because the Earth has an atmosphere and the light that reaches the Moon has to go the long way through that atmosphere. The light is filtered out apart from the red wavelengths which turns the Moon red. Same principle applies to sunrise and sunsets. If there wasn't an atmosphere on Earth the Moon would have blacked out completely
