Yes, if you splice rope! Hence why they're on mariner's knives a lot of the time. We were taught this in scouts when I was a kid but I'd not done it in a very long time; Wayland was good enough to tutor a few of us through the process at a camp last year

Yes, dead handy for poking holes in things. Also great for undoing really tight knots.
