Anyone got suggestions for a serious book?

One that you read and had a serious 'ligh-bulb' on moment or something that changed your view point from that time on...?

in bed with an elephant by Ludovic Kennedy and no great mischeif by Alistair Macleod are two that come to mind immediately.

'How To Be Idle' by Tom Hodgkinson
Despite its flippant title and often flippant tone of voice it is a very good, and rather serious, book.

"Scouting for boys"

To my shame, I have never read it. But its impact on my life has been huge.

I joined Cubs at 8 and went right through to Venture Scout them Scout Leader.

I had a few years out, but am now back in as an Assistant Scout Leader.

Written by a Canadian. They helped influence me to leave full time paid employment working for someone else recently.......and I'm never going to get a day "normal job" again.
Makes you think about what's important in life, and some ideas to live life to the full. Well worth a read.

Into the wild by Jon Krakaeur is a bit obvious, but it meant a lot to me.

The Quantum Enigma, a book that didn't so much enlighten me as turn my head upside down. It explains the bit of quantum theory that says, more or less, that you create the world by looking at it.

This is a biography of the E=MC2 formula, that explains it by going through it's history and results, and fascinated me. Energy=Mass. Convert a gram of mass into the equivalent amount of energy and you get hiroshima. Amazing.
