Hi all - just wondering if any of you lot own/ use a kukri?

I have been bitten by the big knife bug and will be getting one soon.

Andy

I've been thinking of picking one up, but it'd definitely be a toy for me, Can't see myself carrying it very far on multi day walks

Here's Jack chopping at bits of old shed with my kuk. We've used it for some tasks that you'd use an axe for. Took out the hedge at the front garden recently with it, I like it.

Heres some of the things I have used my Penknife khuk by HI...
Chopping upto 7" saplings down into foot lengths
Splitting saplings for fire wood
Used inner curve to peel bark
Skinned and cleaned fish with tip
Cut everything from beef to chicken, onions, tomatoes etc
Dug up underwater roots
Cut cordage
Cut leather
Hammered in small nails hundreds of times
Trimmed and cleaned nails
Used as a coat hook in dead trees
Cleared bush and trimmed natural shelter materials
Scraped fire wood to dry stuff
made fuzz sticks
Took a chunk out of my left knee and moleskins
Checked the blood colour in my thumb knuckles
Burnished wooden dowels for multiple purposes
Battoned through logs up to 13 inches doing one half at a time, did result in cracking a hole into the buffalo though, it's now leather knot wrapped...
Cut and trim leather often.
Lifting and holding up a fridge to remove dead mouse.

I think it's my favourite knife of all time.
Only one thing, fish guts tend to make the grip a little slippy unless you mod it.

Wonder what the native tricks are to using one?

Also really interested in knowing how to throw one?

And before anyone says it, my Uncle saw Gurkas throwing them.

Always an essential function for any knife to be capable of doing. Glad to say none of my powertools have this function ... yet. Incidently a mate of mine found out the hard way that a 5.5mm SDS drill bit has this function when it broke off and went through his thumbnail. Handy thing to know, and avoid.

I have to say a kukri doesn't feature high on my "must have" list (looks and checks and can't even find it on the list) but then again I've never owned or used one so I don't know what I'm missing. Looks to be an all-rounder tool that's for sure.
