Chaps,

No-one hates wasps as much as me but on an ecological note they are important for pollination early in the year and there were reports last year of a poor show for both wasps and bees.

I'm all for wasp traps in late summer but not earlier in the year. What do you think?

(Toddy the blue tits loved the insects - saw the long tails on the regular fat balls :))

Nice one Red, that didn't take you long. Looks like your having some good weather up there...
You will need to look in the reed beds for the beardies...

Nice one :D
He looks all puffed up in his feathery duvet, doesn't he?
The ones around here always seem quite peachy pink coloured over their breasts.

Funnily enough, and it's the first time I have *ever* seen it, a wren came to peck at the crumbled stuff.
I have a lot of wrens in the garden, but they usually skitter along through the hedges and the ivy and among the stones at the edges of the ponds.

I think the recommendation is to use any animal fat but not the vegetable stuff for fat balls.
Oh, and, rendered lard is really, really messy stuff :( Good old fashioned suet or the contents of the frying pan if it goes hard is excellent.

cheers,
Toddy

It was a day of writing training courses and doing some testing on the side :(

So after about 6 hours of 'putering I needed a stretch - the little guys were all up and down the hedge so I grabbed the Canon :) Thought of you Jon when the buzzards were stacking up overhead too (see the "Thermals" thread :)

Strangely Toddy she had just spent ten minutes preening and getting his feathers "just so" :)

She must be a she - I could almost hear her saying "oh, if you are going to take pictures just let me change and do my hair" :D
