Who knows
I just gave my stainless Opinel no.8 to a local knife shop for a sharpen and wasn’t that happy with the result. I used to run it through a cheap pull through sharpener in the past and because of this it’s got a dull spot that protrudes at the bottom of the blade near the handle. I was hoping he’d sort this out but he ran it across a belt and left that there.

Is there any sharpening whizz’s here I could post it to?

Don’t be frightened of taking a file to the protrusion yourself to bring the edge back in line.

“Sharp” only means effective for what you want to use it for. It’s well worth getting used to working at the blade yourself. Shaving sharp doesn’t matter - unless you shave with it.

I sharpen the edge on mine to a 40 degree angle. This means that I hold the blade at round about 20 degrees to the stone and push it forwards while sliding sideways from base to tip then alternate with the other side. This will never produce a shaving edge but it will cut meat, wood and rope perfectly well.
Outdoors it just gets a swipe from an axe puck.

May I recommend a dry diamonds stone rather than an oil or water stone. It will be perfectly good for most purposes.
There’s are loads of videos out there but most grind narrower than I do.

The big thing is not to worry, just try it. What can you lose?
You will quickly learn a basic skill.

pee ess.
I do recognise the satisfaction of using traditional methods and achieving a very sharp edge but that comes with experience, if that’s where you want to go.

Do be careful with that unsharpened blob of the cutting edge near the handle.

Tto remove it will certainly leave you with a blade that does not stay in-line, because there's no effective means of the blade bearing on to the locking collar......

Don't ask me how I know.

Is there a reason you don’t sharpen it yourself? I know some folk have poor eyes, or problems with their hands, but sometimes it’s just fear of doing it wrong.

Costs £6.27 each way with Royal Mail age verification. £12.54 and the time of the recipient to sharpen and drop off at a post office.

Buying a new knife from Moonraker, £10.95, plus £6.95 postage.

A pack of wet and dry paper, £6.50.

Good point, well made. It never even crossed my mind but then I’ve never worried about a curve in an old blade.

New Opinel No8 around a tenner, no brainer.....

Get yourself a block of wood, half as wide as a sheet of wet and dry and 50mm shorter. 115mm. x 230mm. Glue some foam mouse mat to it. Cut the wet and dry in half down its length, and lay it over the foam. Pin the ends down (you should have an inch at each side) Lay the blade on the sandpaper, edge facing away from you, and pull it towards you, curving it as it goes to get the belly and tip. Its all you'll ever need for an opinel, or an axe, or any other blade thats not a scandi really.
