Hypothetically speaking - lets say a certain member of BCUK has applied for an internship based in Mozambique for two months mapping an area.

And that member was thinking that having at least one knife would be a good plan - what kind of knife would you be taking?

bearing in mind that a local is being employed to clear brush with a machete.

worth taking a knife? good solid folder? accompanied by a decent camp knife?

Lol - I'd be tempted.

A mora could be a good shout though. - if nothing else as a trade.

If I get the job I'll be taking a 4" locking folder and a SAK.

I'm not sure how useful anything bigger would be. - I don't need a machete as we would be employing a local to do that job. (I'd want to get stuck in personally but that might be frowned upon:dunno:)

i would take something your prepared to loose, get nicked or give to a guide as a thank you etc

lol - sounds like a mora could be a winner then.

I've considered taking my Kukri but my sensible side thinks that is overkill. - SAK and my enlan folder are currently definitely coming. (neither of which have a huge financial value)

I'd say my Woodlore, but as I'd hate to loose it I'd probably go for an F1 and a Mora Allround as the fixed blades, with a SAK Farmer and SAK Classic to cover the rest. - Oh, and a handfull of Clippers/Allrounds to give away.

In the woods if possible.
A lot of people say you should take a look at what the locals use. I bought some parangs from Woody which he got in Malaysia and I have to say I've been very impressed with them. So, I think has almost everyone who's borrowed them. They don't look anything like the shiny things that you see over here, where a mirror finish sometimes seems almost a prerequisite on anything, but they certainly do the business and you really don't mind them getting some marks from usage!

I'll take a look see. - As said there is a local employed as a "machete guy" to do the hard clearance stuff.

lol Richie, I'll be too busy making geological maps mate! but three months with zero forge time?? - I may go mad! - I'll have to make something up - even if it is literally just a fire something to poke it with.

I think I'll get myself a mora allround. - I've been eyeing one up for ages. Its either that or one of my custom jobbies and I'd be gutted to loose any of those.

I'd go with the general Mora movement with perhaps the addition of a handful of Opinels for trading and gifts of thanks.
I'd be too p****d off if I lost my Robevs or one of my other specials.Maybe a Svord folder for the pocket.
Have fun while you're there.

Plastic ninja beat me to it! A mora as your belt knife along with an opinel or two. I personally wouldnt bother with a sak unless it was the 'solo' as it is a really good blade that you won't mind if it gets nicked, broken, or worse then all that; USED!

why take any knife at all ? , you just say 'oi local (your words) cut that for me my good fellow'....jobs a good'n :)

But seriously I would take a mora and a opinol even if it's just to trade.

You up to date with your shots ?

I'm not up to date with the shots no. - I'll need rabies and malaria at the very least. probably tetanus too.

I probably won't need a knife at all - but I'd rather have one and not need it, than need one and not have it.

The SAK I would take is a Sheffield made copy I got at the local market for a quid.

Hope you get it Andy, should be a great experience.
Personally I'd go with the Moras as others have mentioned.
