This didnt take me that long to carve. proberbly a hour or just a bit more. The sanding part took a long time after that though.

It's the summer holiday for me now because ive finished my first year at college. So when im not gardening to earn money im out there carving and making my canoe etc.. :D

Thanks you Thank you Thanks you !!!

Been hinting and waiting for just this tutorial !!!!

Whenever i try to carve a kuska or bowl though i always end up getting large splits in the wood, they seem to appear overnite while im halfway through projects, maybe its the wood im using ?

I always assumed it was due to NOT using seasoned wood - yet you do this green with no similar issues.

Thanks again

You are proberbly getting splits because it is drying out too fast! Put it in a paper bag whilst you are not working on it. You wont get splits when using wood that is totally seasoned but it will be far harder to carve!

Hope that helps

I have no idea Dynamite Dan. Its likely that i will just be keeping this one for show so i dont need to worry. I cant think that sugar would do anything to the wood. As long as you wash the cup after use i would have thought it would last for a long time.:)

Dan, sugar in drinks won't do the cup any harm so long as you wash it out after use. If you take ten spoons of sugar in your coffee, and leave half an inch of sugar in the bottom of the cup, then maybe, after time. Otherwise it shouldn't be a problem. You can seal wooden drinking vessels with red wine. You'll need to drink a fair bit of it though, but the tannin will help seal the wood on the inside of the cup, and give it a longer life.

This tut is just in time for me as I have just told my scouts I was going to make one. :You_Rock_

I have started them on some carving and tey are enjoying although they are a bit off your standard.

BTW I have been keeping green wood in a plastic bag between carving sessions and it seems to help a lot. I read it on thread somewhere.
