By the look of where you're staying Gary I might just bivvy up on the point of that prometary, or walk across the lake to the woods on the far bank, sort of north east. We can meet up after breakfast etc and go a wandering :D

Maddave,

My brother in law and myself will be looking to bivvy up in the area as well. Which days are you going to be around? Before and/or after the market?

Look forward to meeting up!

Regards,

Lennart

Hi mate. I'm getting the overnight train on the 4th feb so will be there 5th. Then leaving on the 9th for Stockholme to fly out on the 10th.

I think I'll find the site where the boys are, then reccy for a bivvy site. Could mark up with trail tape to locate bivvy site like this (except my marker tape is bright orange :D )

I was looking at some of those Islands out over the lake too.

A lot depends on the conditions of the ice, there is a hydro dam upstream so if the water level is too variable the ice could be unstable.

Best to get a bit of local knowledge on that one I think.

I'm definitely going to spend a few nights out, I'm not going all that way just to stay in a cabin.

I've just booked my flights

Flying to Lulea on the 6th , flying back from Kiruna on the 19th.

I'll be rolling into Jokkmokk on the 6th Feb on the bus, hopefully at around 4pm
After Jokkmokk, I'm heading north on the bus and train to spend a week hauling and camping around Lake Tornetrask and hopefully catching the northern lights at solar maximum.

Bring it on :)

Options for kit storage at the market for us that are sleeping out;

Anyone have any plans or ideas yet?

Maybe a hotel could be a good place to call to give them some cash for storage in the day. Looking for lockers in the bussstation isn't yet fruitful. Burying my kit in the snow is increasingly unattractive too.

On a new journey
.

I think I'll find the site where the boys are

There you go, i can also send you a copy of the google map with all the local POI on if you want
Site lat/long reference

66°35'38.63"N
19°53'26.61"E

And just to echo the above post from Wayland. We have now booked a 2 person cabin, the reason being simply to have a secure location to store kit and a safe place if it turns really nasty (a precaution ) I intend not to spend all my time at the cabin and intend to spend a good amount of time in the surrounding area, as I've got a couple of places on my to have a look at list, And I know that rings true for the other as well. There is no itinerary, and I am looking forward to seeing all those going, and share a fire with you and a hot chocolate (my drink of choice in the arctic).

For those who are intending to spend all their time in the wilds, Can I make a suggestion of having an emergency plan in place, and exact locations, routes, and the such either logged wit the local police, or a responsible 3rd party.
Groups are better than solitary camps as thing like extreme cold do effect your thinking and the signs of hypothermia are usually not noticed by yourself until to late. I would also point out that the local medical centre had to treat 3 cases of frostbite last year, and these were in the town area, so bear that in mind please, and be on the look out
Im having a pre-trip get together at my place on the weekend of the 16th for those of you going to the arctic north over the christmas and new year period, where we can go over kit and cover some basic safety skills and such, if you are coming and not been before if you can PM me or Wayland and we give you the details. Sorry this is only open to those going on either the Swedish or Norwegian meets Jan-Feb 2013.

Good points Da. :)

I'm looking at a lightweight mirror that hangs round my neck to check my face for frostnip when I'm solo.

Some HF members from Sweden may be joining me up north at Abisko, nothing confirmed yet though.
