id my spider please

Hello everyone,
i photographed this little chap (well bloody big chap actualy)the other day in my garden.Not noticed them before.But after spotting this one i found quiet a few about.Can anyone tell me what it is apart from a spider that is. Thanks for taking the time to look.

Garden orb spider. Notice the white cross shape on its back.
The big ones are female and if I remember right live for two years. The last year they breed and after breeding they don't bother with the web and just guard the eggs.

We currently have a beautiful one in our front garden and I'm not allowed to clip the hedge because of her. My wife is scared of spiders but loves them as well.
