I think I will regret this question??

Don't forget, Bushtucker, that you don't have to pitch a 'short flap-long flap, bent square' shelter; there are other shapes, such as: 'bent along center-line and angled away from tree/post/vehicle/rock into the wind/rain in an inverted "V" ', and many other shapes and styles, which may make more sense in a particular situations.

Blimey, I thought it was a silly question but as usual you all gave me food for thought and gave me things to consider that I would otherwise not have.

Many thanks to you all, :You_Rock_

I don't think it would really matter to RM which way the rain came, I am sure he would be kiping in the camper with the film crew.:D :D :D :D :D

Having met Mr Mears "in the flesh" so to speak on a number of occasions now, I can assure all concerned that he is not "chubby." He is "stocky" and "solid" looking but most certainly not chubby. Don't forget that TV will make anyone look shorter and, dare I say, rounder than they actually are.

And Cairodel, while everyone may have an opinion and entitled to hold that opinion, sometimes opinions are best kept private, particularly if they might be considered to be insulting by the person they are directed at or about!

As my old mum used to say - may she rest in peace - "If you've now't nice t' say, say now't!"

Polite rant now over - thank you and goodnight!

Yes... "Chubby" is an unnecessary comment

I agree, we don't allow name calling on the forum, lets extend the same courtesy to people who aren't on the forum eh?
Don't refer to someone in a way you wouldn't be happy to use in person, its not the way we do things here.

Nothing special but an interesting thing to try. I tend to find that you have to adapt to whatever material is available locally. Many of the places I go there is plenty of coppiced hazel and willow and lots of bracken so thats what I use. Its also never a problem cutting bracken - it grows quick and farmers are glad to see the back of it. a few poles from a stool of coppice is not doing any harm either.

I find the bed surprisingly comfy - a good thick layer of spring branches and a massive amount of browse (18" or so of leaves - it soon packs down) and you have a bed far warmer and more comfortable than any air bed. I've found a good small fire with a reflector means, in the UK at least, that you are very cosy indeed

Red

I'd never thought of using bracken, Red, and that shelter of yours looks as snug as the proverbial.

I'll certainly remember that tip and give it a try.

If you pitch 45 degrees to the prevailing wind though, I find the wind pushes smoke away rather than pushing around and into your shelter (I don't know if anyone ese finds this - it works for me though)

Your right I found anywhere between 45 and 65% works a treat as long as you put some kind of a wind block in your sleeping area in the direction of the prevailing wind
