Just finished a couple of noggin style cups this afternoon from some semi green birch.

They were made with my new Twca cam from Mr Westermann of this parish and finished with a light coating of almond oil followed by a beeswax finish of homemade wax paste (beeswax and almond oil).

Tools used were - saw, auger, gouge, Twca cam, carving axe, sandpaper and elbow grease.

These were really good fun to make and may have to churn out a few for Xmas pressies.
The small size meant they dried quite quickly with a low risk of cracking! :)

All the best, Hamster

Very nice. The long handle must give great leverage to work with.

It does indeed, I had never used one before and was a bit sceptical but after making a couple of these I have learnt just how easy the extra leverage makes the work.

Those are great! You make it seem easy. I wish I had some appropriate wood to try one....

I wouldn't say easy but definitely an enjoyable afternoon with none of the faffing around bigger carvings can cause.

As far as wood goes for something this small I would say give it a go with anything you can get your hands on.
I tend to favour birch as I have an abundance locally and it's generally quite easy to carve but any decent sized branch or lump of wood should be ok.

I didn't mean it WAS easy. I meant you make it sound easy. :) Which makes a fool like me think I can do it too... :)

I live in the desert and there is no wood, except some scrubby hardwood. Might make a trip over the summer to get some though.
