I picked up an Arktis patrol pack from ebay brand new for £30, have been really happy with it. Though I would get some side pouches, found a supplier for around £10. They turned up yesterday and have figured out why the patrol pack was so cheap. The zips to take the side packs appear to have been put on the wrong way around, the only way to attach the pouches is upside down. Hopefully can unstitch them and get mother to stich them on the right way around. Did **** myself laughing wheh I attached tyem, happy as larry then spotted they were upside down.

A similar thing happened to me when I bought a set off two genuine issue side pouches in unissued condition from my local army surplus shop. When I got them home I realised why they were in such good condition - it seems the zips where put in the wrong way around at manufacture and like with yours could only be attached upsidedown.

Just double check that its the pack at fault and not the pouches even if they are genuine issue. My pouches where early issue green ones (dated 1988/89) - it had passed through my mind that the early issue plce stuff (bergans/side pouches) had zips this way around and was later changed (or as stated before, a manufacturing fault).

hmm interesting, will be going to the war and peace show on sunday will have a look there. I ordere the pouches ages ago and they have just turned up, wish i had just waited untill the w+p show now. These ones are green as well.

Very interesting! Are you using Arktis or issue side pockets?

Just had a thought .......... maybe as a cunning sales ploy you can only use Arktis side pockets on their patrol pack? i.e. Arktis manufactured side pockets may have compatible "upside down" zips were as issue ones have normal zips? ....... ?  ..... probably a load of rubbish but might be worth investigating.

My problem was encountered using issue pouches on an issue bergan.

I know that webtex used to use plastic buckles on their bergans and pouches which weren't compatable with the issue 19mm itw nexus buckles - I don't know why, I would have thought that being fully compatable with the issue kit would make them more desirable.

Anybody got any modern pouches they could compare to my pic? If you look at the back of the pouch is the zippy up and down bit on the left?

That looks identical to my two pouches (with zips orientated exactly the same way)! Is that contract number on the bottom line something like:

CT2A-2440

Mine is made by CQC and that date looks like 1986. I believe PLCE stuff wasn't in general use until 1988 onwards, so we might have some sort of pre-issue prototype pouches.

I do have a load more green issue pouches with different codes/writing styles, but the writting on yours seems to be identical to my upsidedown ones.

I can only assume a whole batch was manufactured incorrectly (if you have the same batch number) or its an early version with the zips deliberately that way.

I should add that the problem is definetely with your side pouches and not your Arktis patrol pack.

I was serving then (1988) and can tell you that PLCE didn't really hit general release untill about 1990 and that was also dependant on where you were stationed at the time, but in the time that I was in (1986-1999) I have never seen those side pouches with zips on that way up.

I also used the original trial bergan that had a removable waist belt before the PLCE bergan was issued and I don't recall it having zips on upside down either.

I've got a couple of surplus pouches marked MWS 1991 that have the zips up the other way
Unfortunately, the zips are the reverse of the Berghaus Crusader I bought them for
