Ok so i know what it is and how to work it out, my questions is though which focal length do i use?

I shoot on a Nikon D300. One of my main lenses is the 24-70 f2.8. On my camera with the APC sensor that makes it closer to 36-105mm. So when i'm looking at charts do i take the distance from 24mm or 36mm?

Cheers

The lens is a 24 - 70 so that is the actual focal length.

It is the actual focal length that defines it's optical characteristics so that is the best to use although the crop factor will also affect the circle of confusion so I would be a bit conservative with the calculation.
