Hmmm.. now we have Bears rucksacks!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Over priced nasty tat like the rest of his stuff would be my guess. I see that he has a range of ribs coming out too

If you look down the page you will also see the tents, down sleeping bags, what looks like rigid raider type boats and a pee cup, talk about catering to all markets.

Look nice ! don't think I will be rushing out to buy one though. Or Ray's for that matter.
I know it is difficult to evaluate from a picture, but the two larger rucksacks in the link seem to have very thin material where the material is stretched at the bottom ?

If you take away the first figure on all the prices, you get an accurate idea of what the stuff is worth........

You're probably right....personally i'll stick with my Duluth and for longer trips my Predator with side pouches....blimey...i've just seen the bit that says 'Ribs are coming soon' ...how much are they going to be?????

Like some others have said, it doesn't add anything to already existing pack designs. On the other hand however, unlike Ray's pack, at least it seems to be keeping up with current packs (at least in design), rather than taking us back several decades. I already have two good packs, so I don't need another similar pack. That being said however, if I had to chose between this pack and Ray's new pack, it would be this one all the way.

Is it a Bear vs. Ray arms race in expensive equipment that in no way improves on already existing equipment? :)

It's a Marketing / style race.

How I have had it explained to me, Brand A comes out with a new product outside of the normal product line (Letherman makes a bag for etc). Brand B feel's it needs to make a rival, get's a associated celeb to shill, brand A sees B's shill get's its own. And it becomes akin to the old Cold war Arms race... but the guy's who really make stuff don't do either tactics grow at a better rate and have a solid fan base, the best don't become complacent or way set and listen to the ideas that come from the fan base. The even better ones, put serious work into the development of suggestions, including using the suggesters of product ideas to coin a phrase "Eat where they Dump", and use the RnD proto types the use the feedback mixed with own field tests and professional reviews.

There is a cartoon much like this aimed at software developers I'll dig it out, might explain it better.

not really on sales bear has Ray beat hands down they sold 1.7 million of his Survival knife Ray probbaly not even 5000 over 20 yrs

Yes but Ray's knife is more expensive. And he's been selling other kit for much longer than Bear too. I would say that, at least here, Bear Grylls is much better known.

I would argu that the knife with his branding has been selling longer, then again and 3-4in blade scandi grind knife has been selling longer than his. He just took a blade style added branding and got on TV.

Bear is really popular in the US, amongst some groups at least (Urban / suburban preper), but have you felt any of the new bear gerber stuff, it feel's shoddy rubbery grips with LOTS of flex, unfinished blades etc. Ray's stuff and meathods might be less well known, but I don't feel he is respected for a number of reasons in the bushcraft community, the one that smacks out loud to me is, he tends to focus on tribes in Africa and Australia to much, he needs to spend more time focusing on European methods even though not many people practice them if he approached it from the anthropological side of things i.e. let's work out what this tool dug up in Germany or France was used for and shows off the skill's used to make it he would have a better following. But most of his stuff is travel to Africa, little bit of history, followed by 25 min of "I have so much respect for tribe X, they do Y inface of Z", but alot of his stuff is majestic nature shots lasing a minute or more good TV not so much education / info tanment.
I would like to see a guy or gal, who take a serious interest in European prehistory and can spin a infotainment show out of it, that is informative and showy.

That's a bit like comparing the sales of Range rovers to Ford Fiestas though, they're two totally different markets. But both good at what they do within their separate spheres.

Prepers? None that I know of. He is somewhat popular here but not among that group. Even an ex GF liked him and she was haedly a preper. Although she WAS something of a hoarder. LOL. Faults and all, I miss her; she passed away this past December.
