I am really keen on making a knife from scratch, i've drew up a couple of designs and now feel like making them reality. I was just wondering what type of steel i need, everyone seems to go on about 01 tool steel ect, i have been looking on the net www.Cromwell.co.uk but i didnt really understand it as it was going on about the Chemical analysis.

The length i was looking at for the knife is 230mm give or take, thinkness of 4 mm and width of 30mm.

So ground flat stcok of 4mm x 45 mm x 250 would be ideal.

Thanks, ATB.

Lee.

Wow, can you answer a few questions in your next post?

1. what is the knife's primary use?
2. are planning on doing the forging?
3. have you forged anything before?
4. what type of blade style do you prefer

That should get the ball rolling for you!

if you buy 01 tool steel ground flat bar steel, there is no forging needed, heat treatment, yes, grinding yes, most of the work is done for you (the steel is flat and of the right thickness, 3mm 4mm even 5mm). All that remains is (and I say all, meaning that there is a lot of it but it is a fairly simple process) file shaping and heat treatment, and that is relatively easy to do, if you have say a bar-be-que, a hairdryer, some files, and a workbench, maybe a belt sander would speed things up.

If you want to see how to do a basic knife and handle have at look at the thread started by Englishrose222 here, there are a couple of pictures and lots of helpful advice from skilled knife making people

Lee,
There's a thread recently gone up in the Resources section with a link to Greenpete's knife making video - is doesn't get muck simpler than he describes.

The Knifes primary use is going to be general all purpose bushcraft knife.

I'm not planning on forging it due to it being flat pack tool steel

I havent forged anything before, but i've seen greenpetes video on knife making and i'll learn from that.

The blade style i like is the same design as the woodlore, not decided on the blade grind yet, either convex or scandy.
