I' m new to the forum and am pleased to find like minded people. Thought I'd tell you about my best bargain kit discovery. Bought a head torch from www.alpkit.com for £12.50 as a back up to my expensive Petzl.
It is now my main head torch and the Petzl has taken a back seat.
When I first saw it I didn't think it looked up to the job as the bulb area looked too small. How wrong I was it lights up a good working area and fits comfortably on your head.
It has different setting mostly to extend battery life and has a red light on the reverse if walking on roads at night. I've used mine for my last 3 winter wild camps and no signs yet of batteries fading.
It has the added bonus if you are into it of a choice of camouflage headband designs.
You don't get much for £12.50 these days but I'd pay double that to replace this great piece of essential kit.

The Energiser has been talked about a lot here, usually go for about £11 and still good value at full price. Nowt wrong with the Alpkit though either.

The excellent Energiser head torches are on offer in Tesco for @£5 if you need a good source of light.

Had one of these my self and it drove me bonkers.
The light seemed to shine down into my eyes rather that straight ahead. I tried all the obvious adjustments and in the end stuck a little bit of black tape under the lamp to stop me being blinded.
The best bit was the fact u had to cycle through the white light to get to the red EVERY time you switched it off which killed your night vision every time.
That and the batteries never seemed to last long at all, even when replacing the energiser batteries for decent duracel.
I would avoid unless your tent camping on a site and have no need for night vision or a decent throw either come to think of it.

Love my gammas but I don't know if its just me but I tried to put rechargables in yesterday and it wouldnt have any of it. Must not like the voltage difference?
