Well, thanks to Bilmo-p5, i got an old, cast iron Girdle- it has a fixed arm but that's not a big deal for me.

After a day or so spent scrubbing and seasoning 4 times with Rapeseed Oil, I thought I'd try it out this morning....

I have a square one that doesn't get used now (doesn't fit on the hob now) and on the bottom, cast into the metal is the legend, "Made in England, Cast Girdle" :)

Ogri and John Fenna call it a bakestone.........which is what I call the ceramic plate that goes in the oven to cook pizzas and flat breads....funny old world sometimes :)

cheers,
Toddy

Blessed diversity eh? From the little I know about them, the metal plates are an advance over the old slate versions used donkeys years ago - which kind of makes your ceramic pizza stone a remake of an even earlier version!

Ah well, Ogri and John Fenna are both in Wales, as am I, and mine is a bakestone too. :)

Got mine from my grandmother when she died, having coveted it for years.

Can these be used on electric cookers
I've used mine on electric cookers for over thirty years :D

If you're thinking of buying one then measure carefully. My new hob won't let me use the old cast iron ones, but it's brilliant with the modern flat plate kind :D
My new one's is like this

Seemed very rough compared to the old ones I have, but they've been well used, but it's really very, very good indeed.
Happy to recommend these for electic hobs :D

cheers,
Toddy

I use an aluminium one with a folding handle. It's flat and has a lip around the edge so you can fry without the fat running off.
