Had a little play around with some salad cream on carbon steel, as recommended by another user of the forum (with thanks) and very plesaed with the results!

It now has a rustic 'old' look and a little more protection for day to day use :)

mustard seems to be very popular across the pond but not heard of using salad cream..mind you just about anything juicy and acidic will do!

even potatos have given a few nice patinas!

The benefits of things like salad cream/ketchup/mustard is that it is applied even and gives a thorough coating unlike vinegar that works well but doesn't produce consistantency.

How long did you soak that beaut mate? the patina looks really good and deep!

the thing about patinas is that if you don't lie it or want to createdifferen patterns you can just use fine wet n dry sand paper to restore it back to shiney.

however I prefer a decent patina and have no desire for a sharp mirror.

What knife is that? I forgot to ask first time round.. looks like a gooden.

Its one of Gill's Bushcraft knifes. A little bit of various aspects he liked from making different knives over the years, as he describes it...

It looks alot different from the 'norm' but really works. I like it more every time I use it :)
