Thats astounding.. I appreciate a hotel has the right to refuse custom, but if the reason was "management policy not to accept military personnel" thats shameful..

Typical of the people who run these places, would the shoe be on the other foot if these people needed the protection of our lads in the Army for whatever reason ? Me thinks they would be welcomed with open arms !!!!
We should be proud of our military, my family lost loved ones to WWI (as a good many others did), i have my nan's brothers medals and believe me i couldn't be prouder.

So what's new?

Since the time of the Roman legions soldiers returning from wars have been treated like ****

In more recent times, I remember that author Russell Braddon, then a private, was chucked out of the Raffles Hotel just before the fall of Singapore to the Japanese.

Mind you its the ordinary soldier who is refused entry, not officers.

Bit of a double standard still applies

Someone needs to be taken out and given a quick lesson.

I had this once or twice when I was serving, but that was in smaller hotels and B&Bs. I can understand why a small business would do that. They've probably had trouble with service personnel before (there are a few bad apples), but I'd expect more from a chain.

Was there not also some commotion a few years ago about Ryan Air not accepting flight bookings from serving military personnel, I seem to remember being told not to try and book flights with them. It really is quite common for this kind of discimination.

On a lighter note, how about the reverse descrimination that we had in Bahrain. The 5 star Diplomat Hotel would not accept RAF officers as guests but airmen, airwomen and nco's where quite welcome, The officers had to use the 4 star Holiday Inn, Justice is sweet.
:sulkoff: Andy.

The hotel was probably staffed by eastern europeans who were just following the rules laid down by their gestapo directors.
Let`s hope the bad publicity has done enough for them to change their policies and they make a full public apology to the poor guy.

Geoff as disgusting as it is, as the others have said it is nothing unusual. Double standards are nothing new.

Rudyard Kipling said:

TOMMY

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

This was first published in 1890 IIRC.

Things do not change, they never have and never will and for all the polticians say, they have their own agenda.:(:twak:

Mr kipling certainly knew how to make his point in verse, didn't he and he did make exceedingly nice cakes.

Nothing changes Leon they just try to disguise it. Plus we did volunteer.:deal:

Kipling did a number of poems that had been influenced by soldiers, he had a lot of respect for them.

Yes we did volunteer, but I think that makes it even worse as it's not a requirement of state to do national service. It would be like discriminating against an aid organisation worker (bearing in mind that the military get heavily involved with humanitarian aid as well).

Maybe the hotel chain in question has believed all the govt. scaremongering and believes that having military personal in the establishment will raise the terrorist threat.

My intention is rather to find out the owning company and ensure I never use them or any of their subsidiaries. I will make the same advice to my firm. I will then e-mail their Marketing Director and explain why

I saw a report about this on the BBC 6 o'clock news. Suprisingly the manager refused to be interviewed on camera but told the reporter that their hotel didn't operate an anti-military policy. Then he fell upon the age old trick of blaming the poor guy at the front for mis-interperting company policies.

Makes you wonder what those policies were for the guy to misinterpret in the first place...............................
