Flabbergasted! Serving soldier refused hotel room.

It was I who suggested ringing up and falsely booking rooms but this was only in jest and something I had no intention of following up, we`ve all got better things to do with our time.

I did however ring the hotel to make my feelings known and managed to get through to one of the managers. He was willing to listen to what I had to say with regards to sticking up for our boys and we had a reasonably civilised conversation throughout. At no point did I use threatening or abusive language towards him or any of his staff.

There`s nothing wrong with the paying public making their voices heard as long as that`s as far as it goes.

I think you may be the one who has over stepped the mark helixpteron and should perhaps take heed from your own words.

Does anyone have any proof whatsoever that this is anything other than a single, isolated incident that arose through a misunderstanding by a junior member of staff?

Have any other soldiers (current or ex) come forward to say they were also barred from this hotel chain?

I would expect the military boards to be full of similar stories were this the case.

My uncle, cousins and brother-in-law are/were squaddies, and there have been many occasions where their behaviour, while acceptable among other troops, has made me cringe with embaressment and shame. If I owned a pub / hotel I would think twice about having squaddies as customers, based on the behaviour I've witnessed. I'd apply the same thinking to university rugby teams, stag weekends etc as well.

I can well imagine a hotel manager saying to a night-clerk "we get a few squaddies around here, they can be trouble so watch out for 'em", which might well be interpreted (incorrectly) as a "no soldiers allowed".

If there is a systematic policy of barring serving soldiers from a hotel chain then a firmly worded expression of disgust is more than appropriate (even accepting that in a free country a hotel owner can choose who to offer a room to).

And for those who are proudly saying you will withhold your custom... how many times have you stayed in this hotel chain anyway? Are they really going to notice?

If, however, this is one-off incident caused by poor communication and a mistake by a single member of staff, then the responses here represent the worst kind of knee-jerk outrage, stoked by media reporting.

We see it all the time - "Christmas is banned by Birmingham Council!" say the headlines, when the reality is totally different.

Before you go writing letters - nasty or otherwise - based on a hysterical media report, it's worth thinking about whether you're really getting the whole story.

Sad to say, the "powers that be" rely on this type of herd mentality to keep the proles in line. By expending your outrage on a non-issue like this, your attention is taken away from the real problems around.

For a group of posters who pride themselves on not following the crowd it's suprising that some of you would be sucked into this nonsense.

Why should this be any different.

Once every four years, I also make an ethical decision about the powers that be, that is a right my forefathers fought for and I value highly.

I don't suppose anyone notices my individual stance, but if everyone stands up for what they believe in they certainly notice then.

it is, after you have posted, click on the edit button and between the go advanced button and the cancel button is the delete button, click on that and you get an option to delete or do not delete buttons click on the one you want

I listened to the BBC Radio 4 News report where it was stated that the staff at the hotel had been subjected to threatening and abusive phone calls.

What I did not expect is to read the immature, odious, contemptible and malicious statements published on the most respected Bushcraft Forum I have known.

That the moderators and owner would allow what is in effect a campaign of harrassment to persons employed within and the Company itself, which has broken no law is remarkable.

If you believe that the staff are victims of 'policy' why would you want to make malicious calls to falsely book rooms which you have no intention of accommodating. Why are you so eager to question any person within that establishment at all, they owe you nothing, you are not customers or shareholders. You were not involved.

This being an international Forum, your repugnant, self righteous statements are accorded a worldwide audience. What a hideous example of BCUK you provide.

All that has happened is a few people have told the hotel chain what they think of it all. There is no plans for genocide or ethnic cleansing, Jeesh!

Yes this is correct, it was so that people could not stir trouble then remove posts leaving a thread out of context and I dentifying the wrong person as the bad guy.
