Fisher Cat

The fisher, or in the language of my people, atehequa was all but trapped out in my region, but now are slowly making a comeback. A large mustilid, the fisher in spite of it's name hunts in the trees for squirrels, porcupines and birds.

About three times bigger than a pine marten.

They're a rare sight, never even seen a fisher, but I've heard one's scream at night and came across it's spoor the next morning by the Jackson River in Virginia. My Grandmother knew of them and gave me the nickname because as a boy, I liked to climb trees. The fisher is the second largest land mustelidae in North America aside from river otters. Sometimes it is called the black fox.

The largest one I've ever seen is now mounted and standing on a beam in our house. Wish I had a better story, but the truth is that the car in front of me ran over it one night.
