Well, I finally got round to writing up the bivvy bag trip I finally got around to making!

Started off with choosing a woefully small rucksack. My old Deuter AirComfort 28 so, despite the actual weight, this as an ultra (for me) light camp :)

Then it was off to find the spot itself! Couple of lovely evening views on the way and then I was there, again, only half an hour tops from my house. A bonus for two reasons, I was late (again) setting out and if it all went horribly wrong I could get home again, easy! I also had no warm clothing but I was going to be in the bag when it was cold right? The spot as you can hopefully see was lovely and heathery...

Next up, pick the actual spot, away from the huge ants nest I thought was wise, and try out some dull dried food on the mini trangia. As with most things from Decathlon, the food was perfectly fine and before long I was settled back in the bag looking at a clear sky wondering if I might catch any late Perseids. Only a couple but one was the most amazing blaze of light I have ever seen in the sky, beautiful, and I'd have missed it under a tarp in a hammock.

Breakfast was a simple porridge, coffee and away for a treat at home. Very simple little outing but I'm pretty sure the bivvy will see as much action as the hammock in future, horses for courses isn't it!

Made a little video if you want to kill 20 minutes and see a bit more.

Thanks, Chris.

After realising how tired I am I was just rereading that. After about 5 edits hopefully it makes a bit of sense! If you think it's bad now you should have seen it before...

Nice pics, any pics of the bivvy?
Not really, too dark once I set up and packed up early to get the space to have brekky. So just these two. It was an AlpKit Hunka, with their Mountain Ghost 300 in it, straight onto their Dirtbag self inflating mat. Happy with all three.

Wow, looks awesome. It's not something I'd really considered till now ( I like my hammock too much) but if you get the right night for it like you did looks amazing.

Used to love bivvying, one of the best experiences under the night sky. Even used to like it when raining, the extra freedom and lightness to carry.

I see you have your boots in a carrier bag. Is that to stop the rain or the bugs getting in?
Ive always been put off bivvying due to the bugs, but i suppose i could try it with a carrier bag over my head.

Nice looking spot though.

Yep, I thought I could see the attraction, but now I've tried it I really can. Even in poorer weather I'm sure a bit of a tarp will allow me to enjoy being fully out there as much as possible.

The bags were for both, and I expected to wake up covered in all manner of creepy crawlies. I don't know if it was the bug spray or what that meant I didn't but apart from the and on the sleeping mat, no sign of anything!
I'd not advise a carrier bag over the head though 😉

Great write up Chris. Looks like you had good fun. Did you see any adders? I remember years ago see loads around Matlock.
Been here 6 years and never seen one! Mainly exploring the woodland though so with fewer basking spots in there, maybe I'll get a chance out bivvying in the open.
And thank you.
