It's basically a ferrocium rod with a gimmick, but a worthwhile one.
I recently had the idea of combining a whistle into a fire steel so that if the user gets stuck outside with a bad ankle or something, he/she can at least make a fire and signal for help. The sound from both models is similar to a very loud fingers-in-the-mouth whistle.
Version 1
This was my first attempt. I incorporated a purchased whistle that I turned down on the lathe. I used green dyed stabilised burl wood.
Version 2
Making that one, I realised that there wasn't much to the whistle technology and made this one from scratch from more denim blue stabilised burl wood (the ferro rod was from Brisa still). It's more comfortable to hold and more satisfying to make.
The smaller hole is one of a pair of lanyard holes to fit those mobile phone/ key chain lanyards. Future versions may have a full-sized 1/4" lanyard hole like the one above for reasons of versatility.
