hello, I put my fire steal away for a while and now I can see that there's rust and corrosion on the fire steel. has anyone had this problem and what you can do about it to prevent it?.
I coat mine with boiled linseed oil so that they don't rust before the customer even gets them. It comes off eventually, but it helps. You could oil or wax the steel once you've cleaned it up with wire wool or a stiff wire brush.
I would not worry about it at all unless the amount of rust was to the point of impairing the function. It will spark just fine. Coating the steel with oil or some such will keep rust at bay but oily steel does not spark very well untill you scrape through the coating.
