There are too many subtle differences in what constitutes a 'Sandwich' though.

To some it's a quickly thrown together something on a slice of bread or roll.
To some it's a meal.
To some it's a dainty wee tasty bite to go with afternoon tea.

I mean, where do we stop ? is a pizza a sandwich....if a pita is ? or a panini ? or a roti ? or even just toast and cheese ? is that one? is Welsh rarebit still one ? How about a hotdog?

I think anything that has a bread like basis with veg, diary, or meat inner. I would caveat that I 'think' that any heavily process reconstituted meat ( Hamburger ) is moving into Burger territory.
That being said - Koftas in Pita would be the fungi equivalent between plant and meat.

So , not Burgers ( never had a cold burger served - apart from in Spoons ) - so I'd class burgers as some hot served heavily processed meat served on a bun. Not bread cut from a loaf..

But some sandwichs meats are served hot or warm- Cubanos

I guess I mean something that can be easily made at home or purchased from street vendors in a basis that has bread ( of some sort ) - variety or fillings - topped with more bread, or... a pocket of bread with fillings inside.

Looks like I'm going to need a 3D venn diagram. :)

Pizza - No. Its Pizza.

Hot Dog - No. its a Hot Dog.

God has spoken to me and clarified this.

The rest he isn't so sure upon and asked us to sort it out.

A filled baguette is not made from bread cut from a loaf, otherwise I think that definition would’ve been spot on.

I’ve seen in my googling a description by someone: “Hamburger is just a category of sandwich. Sandwich is the Family, hamburger is the genus, cheeseburger is the specie.”

I quite like that.

So I suppose the ‘genus’ we are looking for here is the sandwich of the genus that is made up of deli items usually placed within sliced bread from a loaf. (Usually is key, because of course you can put deli items in anything but we have to allow for culture and custom).

Its strikes me , reviewing this thread , as a species we tend to look to over complicate things.

If you were at my house and I offered you a sandwich and I came back through the door with a Hawaiian 16" deep and crusty - I think we'd both know one of us needs a word with ourselves in front of the mirror.

But, if you fold the pizza over ..... Or, if you fold 'cheese on toast' over surely that's a toasted sandwich :)

Anyway, some more of my favourites:

- cream cheese and blackcurrant jam
- cream cheese and smoked salmon
- mature cheddar and sliced apple

Which as we all know is a foreign pasty.

Shall we complicate thing more? Can a breakfast consist of sandwich only?
For me it can. I never eat (at home) anything else for breakfast than coffee and open face sandwich.
If I stay at a hotel then of course I enjoy what they have to offer.

It's generally held that the sandwich is named after the Earl of Sandwich who instructed his butler to put a slice of beef between two slices of bread so that he could eat without interrupting his session at the card table. However, sandwiches are, for me, inextricably linked to childhood picnics at the seaside when I complained of the sand in what I was eating. My father remarked that they were called sandwiches because of the sand which was in them.

Fully closed sandwichs maybe? Go on... treat yourself.

I have a problem when something called a sandwich would obviously be better were the contents served on a plate with a couple of slices of bread and a bowl of mayo on the side. Why on Earth stack a sandwich with that which it cannot contain and shall inevitably result in laundry.

The mayo video above is a case in point as is a croq monsieur:

Is it still a sandwich if you have to use cutlery?
