I will try and add something different to this thread as a lot of points have been covered. One essential skill is humility, that is knowing when you are out of your depth, metaphorically as well as literally speaking, and not to think oneself superior to experts and people who have experience. A lot of harm can be caused in accident situations by applying the wrong kind of help. I would say that humility extends to being able to take advice, to recognise dangerous situations, whether it be the weather, deep water, deep wounds or when not to move an accident victim. The ability to stay calm and evaluate the situation, to take command of it where necessary and direct others to seek help, or warn others of the danger. These things should come as part of an all round education.
