I will try and add something different to this thread as a lot of points have been covered. One essential skill is humility, that is knowing when you are out of your depth, metaphorically as well as literally speaking, and not to think oneself superior to experts and people who have experience. A lot of harm can be caused in accident situations by applying the wrong kind of help. I would say that humility extends to being able to take advice, to recognise dangerous situations, whether it be the weather, deep water, deep wounds or when not to move an accident victim. The ability to stay calm and evaluate the situation, to take command of it where necessary and direct others to seek help, or warn others of the danger. These things should come as part of an all round education.

And I would add proper reading, writing and calculus skills plus real critical thinking.
Grow a thicker skin, learn to accept opposing views and scrap that blasted victimhoodcult.
I can do without the calculus thank you very much, but an understanding of statistics is certainly useful. Many people on seeing statistics quoted fail to evaluate actual risk.

Some thoughts on Life Skills.

First and foremost:
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS!
Am I allowed to excuse myself on the grounds of age and infirmity, you know it does not last forever. I think you need to be able to use your brain to accomplish what you cannot achieve by brawn alone, which of course is what tools are for. However when you get to a certain age, even the brain becomes unreliable, it sneaks up on you.
