Ebook readers

Certain people are nagging me to get one so I can read my PDFs on the train.

Its a good idea, despite my reluctance to get involved in new tech.

But which one?

I was reccomended an Amazon fire 8 inch. Kind of middle of the road.

What do you think? I dont need a fancy one.

You see the 16gb cheap...but can you get add on memory or change to a 32gb?

And how do you transfer PDFs to the device?

I have an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.

I’m on my fifth Kindle. I started with the 3G version but never used that capability so when it broke, the screens can be fragile if you sit on them, I replaced it with an ordinary one, then moved to the Paperwhite as it is a lit screen.

You get an email address so you can email documents to it.

I do like it, particularly as I read a lot and it means I need to carry something that weighs as much as one book and I have my library with me.

If you manage it correctly. You probably won’t need a massive memory, it’s just if you never delete the pdfs once you have read them.

Amazon store your purchases for you so you can delete them and reinstall as often as you want, but non amazon books can be added using a specialist programme, I use Calibre.

Same as me, I've had the same Kindle paperwhite for several years now. The newer version has a better screen. The memory is plenty for most people and if it fills up its easy to delete items on the device and add more to it as you need them. I often buy an amazon book on the train in to work using my phone app, connect the Kindle to the phone's wifi and within seconds the book appears on the Kindle to start reading.
I can't say I've used it fr reading pdf's though.
The Kindle Fires are tablet devices not e-readers and have backlit screens. You can do a lot more with them (full apps, internet, music, video etc.) but if you only want to read on it its overkill and will be more likely to cause eyestrain due to the backlight. Then again, if you need to zoom in to pdf's etc and look at embedded pictures on them, the Fire tablets will work better for that.
(Actually I think the latest e-readers will play music, or at least spoken word books)

You can get a samsung tablet off ebay for very little money. You can download the amazon kindle app if required. I read on one all the time but mainly use Moon+ Reader. It's the only app I have ever purchased!

I tried with different makes and 'qualities' but was not happy with any.

All made my eyes tired, plus I sometimes forgot to charge the battery....

It sounds utterly mad, but if I can not get a paper copy, I print out books ( on a high quality paper and printer) from online sources.

I would recommend to try them out in the shop, to read for maybe 10 minutes, in various light locations.

Get the largest storage you can afford then add a SD card. Some items can't be stored on the SD Card.

And how do you transfer PDFs to the device?

Connect Fire to your Laptop/PC and drag and drop.

i've got a paperwhite, very handy. easy to transfer stuff to (treat it like s USB stick drive) and screen brightness is easily adjustable which i like as i often like having no backlight at all, but it comes in handy if camping on on a night train etc.

Be careful with Samsung the memory is only just enough to hold the Google operating system 8-9 gig. Leaves no room for apps !

Don't worry.

The sponsored screen savers are just static ads that will be on your front screen.

Don't pay the tenner - you can always do it later. My wife and kids have tablets with the ads and don't care.

Yeah, mines had it from the start, just displays an ad (currently mine shows 25% off covers,) but does also show books and what nots.

Would a tablet not be a better multi use item?

If it's just to look at PDF's there are lots of things as discussed, I read a lot of books and my paperwhite is brilliant, wouldn't be without it now, having the backlight is so useful. Black and white though, if you need PDF's in colour something else would be better and you're getting into the realms of tablets and they can be useful for far more than just PDF's! I have to say though, my Kindle paperwhite is about 5 years old and the battery still lasts a couple of weeks with reading 1-2 hours a day on it. Tablet will give you a couple of days of that or less than a day if used a lot

Advantage of a android device is you can down load kindle, also mon reader or similar then have access to epub files.

A lot of out of copyright stuff is free in epub format

I've got an older kindle and a Paperwhite one. On the newer one you can click on images to enlarge them. Straight up text PDFs are fine but anything with two or more columns, large detailed figures and tables are a bit annoying on the Kindle. A tablet would be much better for those kinds of PDFs. I find a 10" one works really well for scientific papers.

i am for samsung tablet, have used one for years and have loads of books ect on it, plus you can use it for webb browsing also.
