So you didn't go home for tea then or go to school ?

no, actually the caravan 'was' home periodically and in fact i did miss some periods of schooling and when i did go i really hated it, it was a wonderful life being out in the fields and far from missing out i believe it gave me a different perspective on life which i am grateful for.

the society that we live in is neither well balanced nor stable, maybe it's the well balanced and stable people who are best suited to removing themselves from it

If your social life if full of unbalanced and unstable people then it might well be time to consider seeking different people with which to socialise?

It also tends to be healthier in the long term to stay and deal with problems rather than try unsuccessfully to run away from them.

Again in my opinion from my experience.

That's probably true, I'd love to wander off & never see another person as long as I live............... & everyone who knows me could confirm that I'm not a particually well balanced individual.

I don't think there is a person alive or dead that hasn't dreamed of that at times.
It is a romantic notion of disappearing and being totally self sufficient.

In reality though there are very very few people that have been able to survive a long period of time on their own.
Fall and break a leg, come down with severe illness, getting older and becoming less mobile, need materials to carry out house repairs, failed crops, diseased live stock, the list of things that can happen that are potentially life threatening over the long term without a social group to "chip in".

The idea is great when sat at home next to the warm radiator, sat behind a PC screen connected to the internet which makes instant socialisation with anyone from around the planet, get Hungary and nip to the fridge to grab a processed snack that was grown, prepared, cooked/processed, wrapped, delivered and sold all by other people and it all seems like a great idea.

In reality though it would be a long and miserable existence for the vast vast majority of people i recon.

Speak to anyone that knows me and one of the things they'll say to describe me is "not exactly a people person" yet still i wouldn't want to live a life as an outcast having no social interaction with anyone else for long periods of time.

So hermits weren't mentally stable?

Dunno, never met one :p

just out of curiosity, when/why did my social life become the topic for discussion here?

I'd take a house with me, oh.. and a van so I can make trips and go and do some work every now and again.

I guess I'd need the stuff I work with and a computer to get my bookings in with.

Need some company so Debs and Skadi would be there too.

In fact... I think I'd just stay where I am and do what I've been doing for the last 12 years or so.

We had a local lad here who made camp at the end of his garden and slept there for a year to raise money for charity. RM came down to congratulate him on his immense effort and for publicity pics etc and apparently said he wouldn't even consider camping out for a year! The lad said it was ok and he really enjoyed it but was glad he had his Xbox .

Sorry Stu, i was just responding to your earlier post.

the society that we live in is neither well balanced nor stable, maybe it's the well balanced and stable people who are best suited to removing themselves from it

My point is, society is as well balanced and stable as you want it.
If it's not then you have the option of moving into a different society or a different social group.

In my case there are a few that i can't do anything about, but 99% of the people i work, live close to and hang around with are fantastic people.
If they weren't i would spend as little time with them as physically possible, if the area i lived was full of criminals or loud neighbours then i'd move house.

So you really have control on which and where you live as far as society goes.
That means if there are people around your social group (society) then you more often than not have an option to change that.
Only real exception would be if your caring for a elderly, mentally of physically disabled person, but then by you caring for them you are doing a great job at helping society.

You may also want to consider the depletion of your resources in and around your fixed camp, so that you're not running out of firewood after 6 months or something like that. Fair play to ye for seriously considering it though, we've all thought about it...
great thread

Everyone I know who has upped sticks and went on a long camping trip(6 milonths or more) don't pee about asking questions on forums just do it.

When I was homeless all uli had was tent, sleeping bag, rucksack, pot, change of clothes and a few other bits and pieces, that's really all you need" some of the boys on the street in major cities don't even have these)

Personally in quite happy and most comfortable without speaking or seeing anyone for weeks on end when in in my hoose but annoyingly I find my limit for not having human contact while camping is significantly reduced.

If you want to spend a year camping you'll probably find you'll be seriously lonely

1 What would you take. So many things, but mainly tools

2 what reading material would you take. Mors Bushcraft for a start, some greencraft books, a few autobiogs and the backlog of military history and novels that I promise myself I'm going to read

3 what projects or learning would you like to do while there. I'd work my way through Mors book and look to build myself a semi permanent shelter to make life more comfortable. I'd make a pole lathe, shave horse, basically set myself up as a bogger. I'd also get myself a charcoal burner as a way to produce some fuel and maybe some income

4 what would do you reckon be your weekly resupply buget. Not got a clue, but I'd start at about £150 a month

5 what would you use as your main sleep system I.E hammocks or ground or a bed of some sort. I'd start off in a hammock, but as my shelter came together I'd see about making a better bed

6 Also would you take a your furry friend if you have one. Without a doubt, I enjoy company

7 what do you think it would teach you about yourself and the skills you have now. About me, haven't got a clue. About my skills? It would reinforce that I haven't got a clue.

Come to think of it, If I did leave everything to go & "live in the woods" for a year I would end up one very sad sausage. Since I wouldn't be working I would be penniless, my meager savings would have dried up not long after the venture started, I would be filthy,my clothes would be in tatters, camping gear beyond repair & the wife & daughter would have realised that life without me isn't so bad afterall so I wouldn't have a house to come home to. I would be unemployable & it would take months & a certain amount of capital to get set up as self employed again.
Drew also asked our monthly budget which would assume that we would be 'going to the shops' which implies that we wouldn't be far from civilisation so not a great lifestyle change then, just an extended weekend in the woods( 'with ya mates ?) & pop home to watch the footy & have a fry up now & again.

with an extended stay in one place one thing i would do is do everything possible to stop vermin moving in to camp, usual things like latrine some distance away, not leaving food around camp, etc:, after a while vermin will pay a visit and don't need much encouragement to stay around chewing up kit and stuff, you could get some of those screw-lid waterproof barrels (like what they use for canoeing) to store your food supply in for protection from both vermin and the elements, and if you bury them in the ground it may keep food a little cooler, and of course you can keep anything else in them too like clothes etc; but food is the main concern.

i thing we shall have to agree to disagree on this point. society to me means......

n. pl. so·ci·e·ties1.a. The totality of social relationships among humans

so "moving into a different society" really isn't an option, in the context that i was using the word there is only one society, global human society, i stand by my original point, society really is not a balanced or stable thing

cheers

An unstable society on an unstable planet in an unstable solar system in an unstable universe....................looks like there's a universal pattern after all.

I see what you mean.

Thing is though if you turn off your TV, don't buy newspapers, stay away from news site on the t'net then global issues of society suddenly are no longer there.

You then only have the society that you experience first hand on a daily basis.

As an example if i lived in Athens centre and stayed within a 1 mile radius my experience of society would be DRAMATICALLY different than if i moved 5 miles out to the suburbs and stayed within say a mile of my home there.

I think it's great that we have such a wealth of news from around the world and these days it's pretty much instantaneous, we have reports, photo's and videos of happenings half way around the world within mins if not seconds of them happening.

BUT IMO that's not really part our our society that we live in the real world.
If Australia was wiped out but a mega tsunami tomorrow and we had no news of it for the majority of us our lives would not change in the slightest.

So my opinion is that society, is the real world society that we live and interact with, not what we read or watch secondhand.
This we have the ability to change.

ok, so we don't agree, we don't disagree, it's simply that we're talking about completely different things.

my original point that isolating yourself from an unbalanced/unstable society may be the actions of a balanced/stable individual still stands, and it is my personal opinion that the society that we live in (the word society being used in the sense defined by the dictionary, as i quoted previously) is unstable.

as for australia being wiped out by a tsunami tomorrow and us having no news of that; not really my concern, i live in the real world, and that's never going to happen in the real world.

cheers

is this honestly your opinion? do you think that when you close your eyes the world goes away too?
