Miyagi - You weren't the guy who posted about taking a dog on from a miserable excuse of a human at work a while back? Someone took on a dog from a work colleague no-one got on with who chained his dog up on a balcony for all its young life. Was that you?

Aye, Paul that was me.

I agree with the comments about rescued dogs having deep seated problems but I've been lucky in that respect.

The only "hang up" Treacle has seems to be his dependence on me. He follows me all around the house and used to bark outside shops when tied there. Getting my leg crocked last year meant he was used to me being there all the time. Perhaps its because its the complete opposite of the balcony scenario. Who knows.

He chewed up my flat once (it looked like he'd hired a wood chipper and put everything through it) so has got used to briefly living in one of those cage things when I really can't take him with me or have no one to keep him company.

All that aside, bringing him to live with me is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

As a bushcrafter's dog? That's just happening on it's own. He's naturally good at hunting and gives me the rabbits he catches now. I think he prefers them cooked these days!

I've always gone for rescue dogs, and usually crossbred ones too. My old lurcher was the best provider, especially when working with a crossbred collie who did the bushwork to evict potential dinner!! I now have 4 dogs - a very happy pack. I would also urge anyone to consider a rescue dog - especially if your needs are mainly companionship as opposed to specialist work. Please check out manytears.co.uk they try to get rescues into foster homes asap which means that potential adopters can be told so much more about the animal as it comes from a home environment. There is a dog for every home on this site - click on dogs needing homes and see what you think!

lurcher link is good for lurchers and greys. They also foster their dogs. They work with various resuces and pounds to prevent healthy dogs from being PTS.

I saw a couple wlaking about 6 or more dogs the other week. It made me wonder how they ended up with so many dogs. They were a right mix too. Made for a big pack though. I once had a dream where I had a large pack. In that dream I was running through a wood in Scotland with them. Can't remember much more but its something I'd like to live out in the sticks and to have plenty of dogs.

BTW does anyone work long hours yet still have dogs? How long is it fair for dogs to be left alone? Does anyone use those dog walker services if they do have a full time job?

We love our dog dearly but being in Malaysia where there are Muslims neighbors, we gotta be careful where we bring Sox to. Here is a picture of her standing at the entrance of a Semelai (indigenous people) at Lake Bera. Its the only place so far where we are able to let her off the leash. We have never seen a happier dog and we can't be happier ourselves.

She's a mongrel (stray). She chose us rather than the other way around.

p.s Love this thread.

Cheers,

I am currently dogless but growing up my family always had shorthaired pointers and I wa snever without one of them while in the woods. My most recent bushbuddy was a Lab/Rotti/Dane mix lsistened well (with a dog her build you needed her to listen) rarely barked but if she did it was for a reason. Unfortunatley she passed young (8 years) do to a condition that would not allow her to swallow she lost over 30 lbs in 2 weeks and could barely walk. It was a horrible week we lost my mother in llaw 2 days before we lost her.

Great thread :).

I've got two rescued J/R types Max and Eddie.

Eddie is my constant companion, he was still young when we got him and Max was two. The condition was that both dogs had to go together, good deal :D

Rescue Staff cross called Kira. I dont mind saying she is my baby
I dont take the dog out with me in winter due to the fact she moves around a lot at night keeping me awake and cold. Spring summer and autumn she loves to come camping.

Hi, new to this forum, I have a 2 and a half year old german shepherd called Bruce who comes on every outing with me, great for protecting the site but often wants to get involved in any buchcrafting activities, shelter building, firemaking, he wants a go, and often ends up getting in the way for it, great fun to have with me though, will happily walk miles all day. How do I insert a photo without using URL?

Not bushcrafting but we did take the families Westie with us for a 7 hour walk, needless to say he was broken by the end of it. Poor little man.

My 5 month old whippet Mojo is learning bushcraft along with me... his carving is a little rough around the edges, but his foraging skills are second to none ;)

We probably have similar endurance and weather tolerance too :D

Can't wait to take him camping - he makes a great bed warmer - heads straight for the feet...
