The BMI is a real pet peeve of mine. The BMI was a statistical device created to allow analysts to generate projections of obesity in a given population using relatively easily available physical metrics. It was never intended to be used on individuals, and its author specifically said so. The whole concept of calculating your BMI is a total anathema to the BMI's design intent.

It widespread prevalence is down to laziness and a cavalier attitude to defining obesity on less than complete data. Particularly because it does not incorporate gender or any body type information, it has a tendency to judge a disproportionate number of people as obese.

There is a whole industry devoted to inducing self-loathing in the public. They make you hate yourself, then advertising offers to fix it. Happiness through consumerism..... it's the modern way ;)

This is silly. BMI is not body fat. Much too simplistic.

My GP is now asking that your waist measurment is less than 37" as that is the new indicator of high risk, so even BMI is old hat.

Yup, it is tosh, My last medical the doc used a series of measurements instead, no idea what it all meant but I passed so it must be good, I would have failed if the bmi scale was used as it takes no account of actual physical form as in muscle or fat,

Mate of mine in the RAF was a competitive body builder.
He had his BMI checked as part of his Medical.
He was clinically Obese according to BMI despite having around 4% body fat.
It's a waste of time.

Yep, same problem i have, and lots of others, hence why forces medicals are SLOWLY changing to measuring your body instead of weighing it:)

C'mon guys, lighten up!

AH! hahaha slight mis calculation by me, You're most like someone from Venezuela ..

Well there was that hitch-hiker I picked up near Stratford one time, she was lovely. :)

mine's 45,784,218.........:p

apparently i have a slightly lower BMI than the average eritrean, i really should eat more pies!

Funny, Stu, I thought about you when I started the thread... :)

When I was 36 and smoking fairly heavily, I would have removed 70,508,948 tonnes from the total weight of the world's population. Now I'm 41, no longer smoke and have put on a bit of weight, no longer look like I could fall down drains or hide behind birch saplings and I'd only remove 5,703,698 tonnes.

bmi = 24 = less than 81% of people in uk, more than 50% of people in the entire world. 100% not interested :) Now I'm sure I've got a chocolate cake around here somewhere...

Just out of interest Southey, did you know the flaws in BMI at the time? I'm wondering whether BMI is still a useful measure, because anyone it doesn't work properly for will probably be familiar enough with BMI to know it doesn't work properly for them (through being an athlete/body builder/whatever).

remove 3,275,542 tonnes - apparently I'm most like someone from Djibouti.
