Funny isn't it though? Just how clear the Dutch and Scandinavians are with their written English ? Puts the rest of us to shame.

M

Most of the time, I understand my fellow Dutchmen better when they speak english, then when they speak there local dialect.:lmao::lmao:

:D Even though english has been my work language for years, I was a bit nervous when I first started to post on here. Would they even understand what I'm blabbering about... But I soon found out that I had nothing to worry about.

I like listening to different english dialects, even though I don't understand it all.

My dialect is so muddled . Raised around the Irish with a Hampshire Dad and a Londoner mother . (With a mouth like a sewer) . My little brother talks like a yardie and it makes me chuckle .

i used to type as i talk, but discovered it just caused more problem with the overseas members who couldn't understand so try and type more english now. it must be so confusing for non english speakers having to decipher hundreds of dialects

And that is the key point. It is all very well having 'regional colour', but not much use if no-one understands what you just said.

Some dialects even have English speakers confused. Broad Doric can confuse a lot of folk. Same with old school Cornish. I love it though.

Written English as we percieve it now is a modern convention really.

If you do any historical research then unscrambling the various phonetic spellings is essentially just another form of dialect?

At least here 'text speak' is discouraged :)

Regional dialects can also reflect on regional attitude and life style
