Day pack recommendations please

For those days when all you want to do is get out for a bit of wonderful woodiness but not stay overnight, which bag do you take? A small bag or a half loaded larger bag? 25-35l? Possibly large enough for a tarp, groundsheet, stove, food&water, 1st aid, waterproofs....

I’m considering an lt35 with side pouches but before I go any further, I thought it best to ask around a bit to see what other ideas are out there.

Thanks,

Darryl

Berghaus Munro or Centurio for me. Simple and bombproof. The Munro was a forces favourite for about 25 years which is a testament to it. Old style Karrimor or Karrimor SF good to. Also check out the Scottish Mountain Gear range (they make sacks for Ray Mears) and Agiuille Alpine.

Don’t buy the issue black daypack it’s heavy and poorly made.

I’ve got a Munro, just about right I reckon.

I have been looking at the Munro II for a while and debating whether to get one or not,

It seems to fit my needs - frame support, top loading (I dislike clam shell styles), simple components and not crazy sub-division like maxpedition it other ‘tactical’ options.

Can you get side pockets for it? Would be handy to be able to add s a pair of side pockets for slight longer trips

Berghaus Munro. Used by german army mountain troops. You can get side pouches for it.

Older model was the Bundeswehr Gebirgsjägerrucksack 34 Liter, Cordura.
That weights only 775g, the foldable german army sleeping mat, 425g is used in there as an internal frame. (Volume and weight the following shop tell you are wrong, but it is the right ruck sack.)

https://www.raeer.com/shopexd.asp?id=17838

Older canvas versions of that rucksack are heavier.

The Norwegian Army also used a cool old school ruck sack, made from Nylon or before it canvas.

Berghaus Centurio could be an interesting option, here you could change the side pouches containing special stuff for special use.

ESSL Kaderrucksack, used by the Austrian army. 34 Litres or 40 litres for taller people.
Good and cheap!
The prices shown here mean new stuff:

Decathlon hunting ruck sack 30 litres

https://www.decathlon.com/collectio...hunting-backpack-30l?variantid=1128963571725#

(Sorry, I can't give you the link to the British shop, surch it yourself, please)

Together.with two X-acces organiser pockets SMALL as side pouches.

The 50 litres version weights the same: ONLY ONE KILO!

Or the heavier Swedish army pack, of course.

You can get side pockets, they fit both the Munro and Cyclops Roc but are only about 5 ltrs each. I’m not sure if you buy them new anymore mind. The Munro’s for sale seem to be branded as Munro ll now but they look the same as the original? Maybe a sales ploy?

Aah okay, cool, it’s just handy to add a bit extra on for longer trips or so on, might finally pull the trigger then

That's fantastic!

For every special use and content a special colour!

That's how specialists do it!

Two of the simplest and most useful features of the Munro are the shock cord on the back and the pole loops and ties.

Typical British weather can call for jumper on/off, waterproof on/off. The shock cord is ideal for tucking fabric under.

For me, with the hip problem, the pole loops are invaluable. Not many packs have this, and not enough of us use poles either.

The upper pouch of the Munro has a zipper that is outside on the lower side.

Water can't enter so easily, but a thief can reach it very well. Here the difference of well made civil products and military engineering is visible.

Lol how do the attach? By those 2 compression straps?

Yes is the simplest answer.

The compression straps on the Munro thread through the plastic backed side pouches there are eight threading points in total. Two on the top/bottom and two each side of the pouch.

Right. Not being one to hang about, I just had a chat with a very friendly fella at Military Mart and he’s sending me an LK35..... wait for it...... with matching side pouches!! How good is that?!
Informative, personally interested in what he sells (particularly LK35s and Lavuus)...

Now... what about all this weather we’re having? I have places to explore.

Thanks again for all the help and advice, again and if you see some bloke wandering about the woods looking very pleased with himself, that’ll be me!

Best wishes,

Darryl
