some of the replies seems too dismissive and come across as "I don't use a crossbow so I don't care if they're banned."
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Can't help feel you are ( possibly unintentionally ) conflating a few things with that quote..

I have Crossbows and I hold Firearms.

I can't help but feel that a crossbow is , due to its ease of access , and power and once cocked , does indeed pose a potential point of concern ref requiring a 'better' way to try to mitigate that they don't become misused. I don't want to rain on anyones parade or stifle interest in archery but they are a very capable tool for its sole purpose - putting a very sharp object into other objects at distance.

It maybe different in your country but we do have some very real examples of them being misused.

Well, how is the ban and licensing on guns going?
So well, that a man was gunned down in Bristol today, suffering life changing injuries, and causing 3 schools in the area to be locked down.
Just saying.....if bans and licencing worked so well, how did that happen?
I'm not arguing for or against. Just thinking and asking questions .

I just don't think it works.

Is that a serious question?

Licensing restricts and records access. There are consequences. There is criteria to be met.

Does it reduce the amount of incidents to Zero ? No.
Is it better than having no licensing or checks of law in place? 100%

Analogy - How many car drivers on the road hold licence , MOT and Insurance ? the Majority or the Minority? Yes there will always be a 'way' to try to circumvent the legal framework to regulate.

If the ban had been in place Thomas Hamilton could not have murdered 16 bairns, injured 15 others, and killed their teacher......that was the turning point that made a nation decide that we loved our children more than we loved guns.

So, here we are, and those railing agin the ban are conflating crossbow restrictions to the Holocaust ? what are you people on ? because it's not in any way the same thing, it's in no way the same scale or importance. It's like claiming someone's a Nazi because they like milk in their tea rather than the purity of black.

The crossbow is a tool that's rarely used, but much abused. The law simply seeks to make it so that the police/procurator fiscal (don't know the English version of that role) and Sheriffs can come down on someone using one with stupidity, or murderous intent, in mind.

Do I want more laws ? more restrictions ? do any of us ?
I'm pretty sure the answer to that is no, but, we're not the stupid ones doing stupid things with tools that honestly are not intended for anything but targetting people or animals.

Would society be the poorer for not having crossbows freely available ?

Pretty sure the answer to that is a no, too.

Before anyone starts on me again, I'm away to find another Mod to make the decision whether or not my post contravenes things.

The problem with that example, and others, is he should have failed the checks at the time.

But I think it does get too political to discuss further.

Yes, but he ought to have, but there was a really strong gun lobby and they and the police didn't act together on concerns about Hamilton. It really showed up the failings in the system that was in place.

I think we can consider that historical though, not really politically active, not in the UK.

How many mass shootings in the US per capita versus the UK? Its not rocket science, restricting gun ownership greatly lessens it. Might not stop it completely but please dont be obtuse.

I think this thread could do with cooling off. It has more than fulfilled its original purpose in making people aware. Now it’s just too many folk disagreeing and getting annoyed with each other, much as I described in an earlier post.
Thank you, and have a good evening.
