On the subject of salt - it could be that you are not getting enough broad spectrum salts. I base this on the eating a bananna cure... banannas being high in potassium...
I have suffered from a potassium deficiency problem since almost carking it from heat stroke/dehydration in '76.
I was put on salt tablets by a GP but this upset the Sodium Potassium balance in my body.
I now use Lo Salt (a low sodium salts mix inc all the minor salts) for food use and after any sweaty activity I swill a rehydration drink (blackcurrant Dyoralite is my favourite) and now rarely suffer cramps except in my neck (but that is down to my paralysed face more than salt depletion) so it works for me!
Good luck with the thyroid thing - I was investigated for this recently (turned out to be a wild virus) but if your symtoms are anything like the ones I had then you want that sorted FAST! :)
Oh and dont anybody bother getting old - it hurts all over and the only cure for getting old is worse than the problem itself.....

Wise words from John, Shewie.

You say that you have plenty of salt in your diet, but if you drink too much, and I mean hydrate...not booze ;), you will dilute your body's salts...which can actually be fatal. I don't know how much water you drink mate, but it is another thing to think about.
However, seeing as I am just a year shy of being on the wrong end of a major birthday...I will be taking John's advice and not getting any older!

From personal experience I can tell you that John's right on all counts there. :(

When I was doing a lot of training, a lot of cycling and building a house I used to lose a lot of salts because I was sweating even more than I usually do. The loss of salts caused me terrible trouble with cramps, they would literally bend me double backwards. When I figured out what was going on and made sure to get enough salt in my diet, the problem completely went away.

None of this should be a substitute for medical advice from a GP of course.

How much water you taking on during the day?

The Mrs got cramp occasionally, told her to try drinking more water and she is fine now.

Worth trying as it's easy and cheap.

Strangely enough this happened to me last night. Doesn't happen too often but a few times a year, same for my wife. I always thought most people had it occasionally but I guess I was wrong!
