couple of my latest

Haven't posted in awhile, but here are a couple of knives I've finished up recently. The first is patterned after the Thai style. It's made from 5160 coil spring.

The second has become my main user. It's L-6 with a hickory handle. Never tried the scandi grind, but I'm a believer after trying it out. Wicked cutter.

The second looks very good. L6 blade? Educate me, what is L6? Metal grade, or name given of the smith? (I really like that blade btw)

DKW, L-6 is just the type of steel. It's used mainly for saw blades. Good tough steel.

Thought so, just wasn't sure. Thanks for the explanation. The blades look great, and i love the handle on the second knife. Very nice work.

How do you fix the blade into the handle?

For both I burned the tangs into the handle. I also used epoxy with both, and the top one obviously has a pin through it. For the bottom one, I notched the tang and drilled some small holes through it to give the epoxy something extra to grip to.

I've been giving it a good beating. I was out wandering in the mountains near my home, collecting some pinyon rosin with it. The point was quite thin, and I was using it to dig the hard sap out of the tree, probably not a good job for most knives. I didn't notice it happen at the time, but the very tip broke off. I measured it and it was only 1 mm. Nothing I can't live with and fix quite easily. I did a brass rod test with the edge before putting the handle on and it flexed without chipping or rolling. Maybe I still tempered it too hard or maybe the tip was just too thin. I'll keep using it hard and seeing how it holds up.
