Cotton smocks

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
You could always try Titan Smock they have a good smock you can get in olive green, I got one a year ago, modded it slighty & now wear it constantly when out , with a wool dockers jumper underneath I never feel the wind or cold & it has been treated with nikwax cottonproof , but I still throw my poncho over it when it rains to heavy. all in all a good cotton smock & at a very reasonable price.

Hi Arnoldus,

Some two momths ago I had the same problem and basically the same question in that thread you might find some ideas.

http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35773

I must say that eventually I decided to spend some more money and went for an windshirt from hilltrek. (single ventile is 130 pounds, I got a double ventile one with some extra modifications so it was somewhat more expensive).

It arrived last week, just in time for the dutch bushcraft meeting last weekend. I must say it performed perfect, kept me warm and dry. And it really has seen quite some showers and wind over the weekend. Also during the weekend I haven't had that clammy soggy sweatty feel I always got in any sort of technical jacket.

So although I I also didn't want to spend a lot of money on a jacket to start with, I'm very happy I did.

Maybe you should lookup as much as you can about ventile here at the forum (especialy the pro's and con's of double versus single ventile). and reconsider.

Also if you need help, I'm sure Hilltrek will be happy to help, ask for Bill.

No links to them apart from having one of their products.

Hope this helps. By the way if you want to see Ventile at first hand, maybe we can meet sometime, be happy to show you mine. Just PM me.

The SASS ventile in all but name one I bought is simply superb, I don't think it was a lot of £100 and I had mods made to the sleeve length, pockets and hood.

They really are very good and great people to deal with.

It was this one; now I think of it, I think they were doing a special price at the time. Worth ringing them though.

dandan the man called dan,

im sure both are made of cotton, ive seen pics of the over the head type dyed o/g,and ive seen a site online that sells them dyed, and like i said ive dyed one of my other type, took the dye no probs.

Have a SASS OG smock, more than happy with it.
Every fabric has its limits, the cotton mix of the smock may not withstand heavy rain but drys out fast, plus care and maintainence is easy.
Had a ventile smock ,very windproof but felt like wearing wet heavy cardboard when wet,and took ages to dry out.Eventually sold it.

Aye Swedish snow smocks are great, cheap too.
If the rain keeps coming down though, a poncho over the top is the way.:umbrella:
Ive a couple of ventile tops. They are more waterproof if treated with nikwax but of course a few extra pennies
