Planning my summer trips. The Hebridean outliers can be shifty due to the weather and I think it best to take food over and above my meals/snacks.

DO NOT suggest KMC.

What kind of foods do you like though ?
Rat packs are hard to beat for convenience, variety, and long lasting stuff, just in case in the car. Having said that though, I'd rather pack a decent box with stuff I know I'll eat.

I can happily visit Home Bargains and stock up on their sealed bags of fruit like dried mango, apple rings, mixed nuts, jerky if it's stuff you like....visit Sainsbury's next door and they have bags of pieces of crunchy baked cheese :) all the protein, a little lower on the calories, but it doesn't need a fridge. Near as daughter in law loves the peeled roasted chestnuts in those sealed bags too. Usually pretty long dates on all of those too.

If you have the wherewithall to heat water, some spoonsful from a bag of mixed fruit muesli, couple of scoops of dried milk, and there's a hot porridge breakfast.
Instant noodles are quick, pretty bombproof really, and filling. Add in some cuppa soups and some of those vacuum packed mini naan breads....

I think it comes down to what you want to eat.

I've been taking a bag of things called Energy Balls out with me. Theyre individually wrapped balls of coconut, date, seeds and nuts, but though theyre in the supermarkets I can't find the name online.

Pip&Nut do some decent almond butter stuffed bars that I keep in the car. Hypothyroid, so I sometimes need an easy boost.

How does your diabetes affect what you can eat?
Can you heat stuff up?
Packs of cheap noodles that you can add stuff to perhaps.
Apples, nuts,dried fruits, oatcakes.
Jars of olives and cheese like baby bells
I'd go to band m and get the small multipacks of peas , carrots, and sweetcorn, then a few tinned potatoes tomatoes, instant mash. They also do tinned burgers and other meats. A tin of stewed steak and some peas and carrots in one pot, with some instant mash , made in another pan. Instant meal.
Hot dogs , fry an onion, add the dogs and a tin of tomatoes, simmer for a while to reduce some of the juice, then add instant mash to thicken up a bit. Instant Sausage stew, or you could take a few of those packets of various mixes to make stews etc. I always have a sausage casserole one on me at camp. Add in some chopped peppers with the onions and maybe some mushrooms makes for a good filling meal. Can all be done in one pot if you are canny. Serve with some decent bread to mop up the juice.
If you are hungry but lazy, rice (boil in a bag,) add in some veggies onions peppers, a few chunks of tinned ham, sweetcorn peas etc from your tins. Done!
Instant porridge pots, just add hot water. Brekkie or hot slow release energy snack in a few moments.

Try searching for Logan Bread. Various recipes and you can tweak to your taste.

For example:
"Logan bread is a dense quick bread full of dried fruits and nuts. Named after Mount Logan in the Yukon, Logan Bread’s delicious taste, high-calorie content, indestructibility, and non-perishability make it an ideal backpacking food."

I thought those Energy balls were for the birds !? They are made out of the same stuff, ...allegedly.

I make my own energy balls. I go for discs as it's easier to just use a scone cutter and also makes me happier about storage of them in the freezer where balls are a waste of space.
That's a brilliant idea.

(I'm not that keen on squishy balls....oooh matron!) :)
Sorry, couldn't resist, got my silly head on.

These meals are very very compact, but an acquired taste I suppose but something that can literally fit in your pocket
