Let us know how you get on Nigel - I havent tried the ali set with greenheat so it would be good to know.

Also one tip - I usually build a small twig base, like a mini temperate fire lay, and place the windshield over this

Well my findings are:

Swedish Army Trangia Ali Set
1 sachet of Greenheat
1/2 pint of cold tap water in the smaller pot (equal to a mug of tea)
Temperate fire lay of about 2cm in height (to raise sachet nearer pot and as Gary says, insulate it from the ground)

Time taken to a good rolling boil 11min 30sec
This might be improved on by raising the platform higher so the flame could be a little nearer the pot. There was about 7min of usefull life left in the sachet - easliy enough for a brew or some simple cooking e.g noodles/pasta

Just for fun I timed the meths burner:

Time taken to a good rolling boil 7min 30sec
This was from a cold start, only its second light and about half full of fuel.

So IMHO the Greenheat sachets are pretty good stuff. It saves you the trouble of carrying meths (with the attatched risk of spillage in your pack) and the burner. It has quite a pleasent smell, unlike hexamine which I believe is also toxic and is harder to light. Another small bonus is that it dosent leave gunk on the bottom of the pan - so pretty clean. Just the stuff for a potter in the woods or a lightweight weekend away :biggthump

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but after trying two branches of Safeways/Morrisons and finding them out of stock, I phoned their customer services and was told that the reason that they were selling this so cheap is that Morrisons have discontinued it, and there is definatly no more in stock anywere.

Does anyone know who the manufactures are??????????????

I was just curious as I was in B&Q and bought a bottle of "fire starting gel" (one of their own brands) and although it works really well, I wondered if it was the same stuff.

Its white in colour.

What colour is Greenheat?

Try Blacks Outdoor shops too. There's a sale on at the moment and I got one of the little tin greenheat picnic cookers for 1.99.

Will go quite nicely in my brew kit in the boot of the car.
