take the fluff out of the cattail, bung it in a small sweet tin (compact it really really well), with a smallish hole in the lid, char as you would when making char cloth, works a treat, smolders/burns for ages.
The original poster said he was using a flint and steel while others are speaking of using a firesteel. These two items are vastly different form each other. I've never seen cattail fluff smolder or flame up using flint and steel...at least not before it's been charred. What is walshy using? Firesteel or flint and steel?
