Canoe Insurance??????????????

I bought an inflatable canoe yesterday and thought Id give it a go today (my very first experience on the water). I was really enjoying myself at Sale water park when I heard somebody shouting. It appears you need to pay to use the water, but even stranger is that I need third party insurance for liability of up to 1 million pounds.

This is madness. What the heck harm am I going to do to somebody with my inflatable??
Why cant ANYTHING be simple??
Looks like ill have to join SOTP to get all the legal info that obviously exists, but if you happen to know what info I need I would be grateful if you could post it here.

Joining the BCU will get you all the insurance you need and will also get you free access to canals and navigable rivers in England.

The cost of membership is less than insurance would cost you to get on your own.

And you do not need to join SotP, you can search SotP without joining and all the details should be there. i would not want people thinking we are press ganging people into joining

NO it is actually compulsory to join SOTP if you have a form of water craft

Sounds like the guy was shouting at you and telling you some 'facts' that you couldn't argue with! It seems to happen quite a lot in the canoeing world, best thing you can do is get "BCU'ed up" and arm yourself to refute his 'facts' I hate when that happens, makes you feel really guilty even when you may not be. He could have had a nice quiet word with you but....

Anyway did you have a good time, did you wobble like a jelly and when are you going back out??

Ill be going back out as soon as im BCU'ed. The thing is.. i was having a hard time getting the canoe back into my rucksack so i decided to cut the top bit (rucksack) so the boat would go in more easily.....and whooops, I gave the boat a bit of a nick..DooH!!

Also, The water park I went to has actualy been closed for a while due to "blue green algea" or something like this. I didnt see any signs anywhere.

SOTP is a dangerous place though, I joined to ask a simple question, unfortunately I caught something when I was on and now want, no need a canoe.

Everyone needs a canoe they just do not need to join SotP. They are welcome to do so just not forced

Liability in case you damage property or another person (party).

We have 5million liability at work. If you goto a sop or barbers they shoudl have their liabilty certificate displayed somewhere.

Ive joined the BCU now (£38 pa). Membership includes a license for waterways and liability to 10 million.
